Balsam Poplar

Balsam poplar is a deciduous tree that primarily occurs within riparian areas of boreal or montane forests or flood plains. It prefers cool, wet sites and is a pioneer species that establishes new stands along northern river flood plains. Balsam poplar is a medium to large deciduous tree with a straight trunk and open crown. It has smooth, light gray to grayish brown bark and ovate or broadly lanceleote leaves with finely toothed edges. Balsam poplar is browsed in small amounts by moose, deer and snowshoe hares, usually during times of winter food shortage, and is used for food and building materials by beavers.
